How to Adopt an abandoned dog

Sep 12, 2010 02:21 PM

Very often we find that people prefer to adopt an abandoned dog rather than a pure breed one.  An abandoned dog can be a good pet and a good friend too. But there are things you should consider before adopting a dog. Remember such dog needs love, care and affection. The dog may be passing through many ordeals . For instance, the previous owner was rude, probably assaulted, or because of the sudden death of the owner the dog was put in the shelter, or the previous owner was allergic to dog hair and the reasons are endless.  These may cause some changes in the dog's behaviour such as aggressiveness.

But such problems can be solved if you follow some important steps which are very important before adopting a dog:

   - First decide what type of dog you prefer. Such as big, small or medium size dogs.

     - How much time you can devote for your pet? If you are really a busy person then you should reconsider the adoption plan. Because rearing a dog needs time and effort. Discuss with your partner and listen carefully what he/she suggests.

   -  Visit a dog shelter and search the type of dog you are looking for adoption.

  -  Once you find the dog, collect some information about the dog from the dog shelter. The shelter can give you some details of the dog, such as how they found, how the dog behaves, habits etc.

  - This step is very important. Establish a good bond with your pet. Visit regularly at least a week to the shelter before adoption and take your selected dog for a little walk everyday and show your love. This would make adoption very easy.

  - Before you take the dog to home visit a nearby vet hospital and give necessary vaccines, consult with the doctor.

Also consider the following before adoption:

   - If you have children in home then see which dog loves children.

   - If you have elderly persons in family then choose a dog who is not too active.

But do not choose a dog just because he/she is beautiful or says "take me home":).
